Key Reminders for HazMat Drivers
Placarding
- Ensure your vehicle is properly placarded according to the type and quantity of hazardous materials you’re transporting.
- Recheck that the appropriate placards are applied during the route as the trailer load changes.
- Verify placards are visible on all required sides and free from damage, dirt, or obstructions.
- When in doubt, always contact your supervisor!
Shipping Papers
- Always carry complete and accurate shipping papers.
- Keep them accessible in the driver’s immediate possession.
- Double-check that proper UN/NA numbers, hazard classes, and emergency contacts are listed.
Pre-trip Inspections
- Confirm placards match the cargo before getting on the road.
- Verify that all documentation aligns with the load.
Avoiding Violations
- Never mix incompatible hazardous materials without following regulations.
- Report any missing or damaged placards immediately.
